Measuring for Drapes: Drapery Width
We make it simple to measure for your drapes.
To begin, consider whether you need drapes for everyday use or simply for style.
Functional Drapes vs. Decorative Drapes
- Functional Drapes – Designed to open and close, providing privacy, insulation, and light control. Perfect for bedrooms, living rooms, and any space where flexibility is needed.
- Decorative Drapes – Stationary panels that frame the window for style without movement. Best for adding softness, symmetry, and a polished designer look.
Knowing whether your drapes will be functional or decorative also helps determine the appropriate width. Functional panels need extra fullness to cover the entire window when closed, while decorative panels can be made narrower since they remain in place and are only meant to frame the window.
Width Options:
For functional drapes, start with the width of your drapery rod. If you don’t have a rod installed yet, estimate the width of the rod by adding approximately three to six inches to the width of the window.
- For rods measuring up to 42 inches wide: Order a Single-Window Width Pair (2 x 25″ panels = 50″ total)
- For rods measuring 43 to 79 inches wide: For the best fit, you may need a custom width. Contact us for a free quote.
- For rods measuring 80 to 84 inches wide: Order a Double-Window Width Pair (2 x 50″ panels = 100″ total)
- For rods wider than 84 inches: You’ll need a custom width. Contact us for a free quote.
Measuring for Drapes: Drapery Length
When planning drapery length, you’ll need to think about both the rod placement and the hardware drop:
Rod Height: A good rule of thumb is to install the rod a couple of inches below your crown molding. This creates a taller, more elegant look.
Hardware Drop:
Traditional Rod & Ring: Measure from the very top of the bracket (or the highest part of your hardware) to the very bottom of the ring.
Zip Rod (or standard rod without rings): Measure from the top of the bracket (or the highest part of your hardware) to the bottom of the rod.
Drapery Length Formula: Measure from your planned rod placement down to your desired drapery finish length. Then subtract the hardware drop so the panels fall at the correct spot.
Example: Rod installed 100″ above the floor, hardware drop 1.5″, and you want floor length at 96″. Your drapery panels should be cut to about 98.5″ finished length.
Length Options:
- To the sill – Casual and practical.
- To the floor – Clean and classic.
- Breaking slightly – Adds softness and elegance.
- Pooling – Romantic and dramatic.
